History Avenel is a locally well-known historical and haunted house in Bedford, Virginia. The original plantation known as Avenel was built circa 1838 by William M. Burwell and his wife, Frances Steptoe Burwell. Located in the heart of the city of Bedford, Avenel has been the centerpiece of social, cultural, and political life for over 150 years. Claims An apparition known as “The White Lady” has been witnessed on several occasions on the grounds and in the upstairs hallway. Dining Room – a small boy who was a relative of a bride to be married at Avenel saw a tall man in a top hat in front of the fire place on two different occasions. Entrance area/stairwell – smell of cigar smoke reported and the sound of front door knob turning from the outside. Front Parlor – evps of a cat meow and the word “no”. Old Front Door – bang sound heard determined to be similar to the old mail slot opening. Back Parlor – ceiling light seen moving when no one upstairs. Red Room – smell of cut flowers. Meeting Room/Burwell Bedroom – rustling sound heard like cat playing with paper and “rub” of a cat felt on a leg. Pink/Beige Bedroom – chain to bathroom seen moving at same time as K-2 meter lighting up; smell of perfume and cold drafts felt ; people feeling nausea and headache in room and bathroom; photo shadow of small child; ceiling light fixture rotating. Lee Room – loud noises, furniture moving, curtain moving, indention on bed, and from outside a man seen dressed in overalls in the window.
Investigation Investigators present: Jeff Stanley, Jim Tarazewich, Mandy Belue, Connie Treadway and Jennifer Collins Set up for staging the investigation was made in the Dining Room. The house next door had a speaker system going until about 9 pm with Halloween type howls, moans, groans, etc. Everyone went together on a walk through of the house and then regrouped in the Dining Room. During the walk through, the highest EMF reading was a .8 in the downstairs bathroom. Jim set up the motion detector in the downstairs bathroom. Next we all went up to the Lee Room and Jim set up his video camera and the grid light. When we first entered the room, we all heard a couple of growls but at the time wasn’t sure whether or not it was coming from the speakers next door. Later, during evidence review, actual growls and words from within the room were caught on audio. We also did a short group evp session in the Lee Room at this time. At one point Jim’s flashlight came on by itself. Although the audio was also contaminated from the trick or treaters knocking on the door and screaming, we did hear a loud bang caught on audio that sounded like it came from within the house. Next we split up and Jeff, Connie and Jennifer went to the Pink/Beige Bedroom upstairs and Jim and Mandy went downstairs to the Red Room. Jim and Mandy heard footsteps and Jim became very cold at one point. Contamination of audio continued with teenagers on the front porch and around the side of the house. Jeff and Jim went outside at different times and talk to the kids and asked them to leave which they did eventually. When we regrouped in the Dining Room, Jennifer reported that while in the Beige/Pink Bedroom bathroom doorway she experienced a pressure headache. Next Jim went with Connie and Jennifer and did evp sessions in the downstairs rooms and Jeff and Mandy did an evp session in the Meeting Room/Burwells Bedroom. Once Mandy thought she heard a voice and Jeff heard a squeak like a door opening. Then Jeff and Mandy moved to the Pink/Beige Bedroom. The EMF sweep showed a .5 in the bathroom. Mandy felt freezing on her arms to the point of burning when the EMF was elevated in the bathroom. Next we took a break downstairs and Jeff had to leave around 11:00 pm. Jim and Jennifer did a walk around the grounds. Mandy left her recorder in the Red Room and went out on the porch to take photos. We finished out the investigation with Mandy and Connie in the front parlor and Jennifer and Jim doing evp sessions in several rooms upstairs. Around 12:30 pm we decided to wrap it up and we packed up and left.
